Sack Sewing, A Lost Art

91 year old Wayne Ryan of Oregon demonstrated the old way of sack sewing during the 2011 Dufur Threshing Bee in Oregon. Mr. Ryan worked as a young man sewing sacks on some of the very first eastern Oregon Wheat combines where it was critical to keep up with the harvest flow. The goal was to sew a burlap sack full of grain in half a minute or less. For a complete set of photos (By Kristi Gilman-Miller) see the upcoming Fall issue of Small Farmer’s Journal.
