Basil Scarberry’s Ground-Drive Forecart
Basil Scarberry’s Ground-Drive Forecart
by Basil Scarberry of West Virgina
Basil Scarberry is a West Virginia horsefarmer and farm shop inventor. He developed this brilliant, straight-forward ground drive forecart design and for several years has demonstrated it at Horse Progress Days pulling hay rakes and tedders. His in-and-out switch is a warn hub from a four wheel drive pickup’s front wheel mounted facing forward and underneath where the tongue fastens in. Mr. Scarberry is anxious for other farmers to have access to his design and has consented to share these drawings with you. I have watched this unit perform many times and have marveled at its streamlined efficiency. It works exceedingly well. We applaud Basil’s genius and his generosity. LRM
Forecart with ground-driven PTO
I used an ’84 Chevrolet S-10 rear end to build my forecart, turn it over to get right rotation, used master cylinder off buggy and 2” Reese hitch, extend hitch out to use P.T.O.
Options/Accessories Available: a) split level tongue for ease of turning (especially useful when training colts); b) stub tongue for transporting forecart behind a vehicle on the road; c) interchangeable seats to accommodate one or two passengers; d) hydraulic brakes and cable-operated parking brake; 3) lock in/lock out chain driven PTO (especially useful for hay tedding); f) adjustable hitch (adjustable both for length and height); g) tool box and luggage compartment; h) whip stock holder.
Comments: The cart is especially useful for tedding hay. However, its uses are virtually unlimited. We use it for hauling firewood on a trailer, for pulling a disc and peg tooth harrow, for hauling baled hay on an 8’ x 16’ hay wagon, and just for a jaunt about the farm and community.
