Joe De Yong, A Life in the West

by William Reynolds

Important New Western Art Book

Our good friend and resident Cowboyologist, William Reynolds, has just released a beautiful new, coffee-table, artbook entitled Joe De Yong, A life in the West. This big, case-bound, limited edition volume features over 500 images of De Yong’s artwork, writings and photographs chronicaling a life devoted to depicting the west. Total immersion, that’s what you get when you start slowly flipping the fulsome and intriguing pages of this important testament to an unsung artist and the romantic era he depicted and adorned. In the interests of transparency I declare that Bill Reynolds is a good friend of mine, a man of monstrous talent, and a heck of a fine fellow. Even if he weren’t I would want to tell you about this wonderful book. If the history of the old west, true artistry, and good dry-country stories are of interest to you, this book will thrill. I’m already making a list of folks I want to gift with Joe De Yong, A life in the West.

Storey’s Guide to Raising Beef Cattle, 4th Edition

by Heather Smith Thomas

Essential Cattle Raising Book, Revised & Refreshed

If you’ve been reading the SFJ for long you know that Heather Smith Thomas is the purest gold of country authors, always offering, in her many articles and books, understandable and accessible wisdom and practical advice that springs so clearly from a cherished, successful life of working a family ranch. Working with the good folks at Storey publishing, Heather’s new, soon-to-be-released, fourth edition of Raising Beef Cattle is well-written, bright, well-organized, and chock full of vital tidbits such as the one to the right about the nutrient difference between natural nursing action and drinking from a bucket. My wife and I have been raising cattle for decades yet we still occasionally find ourselves at a loss to remember a simple trick or device. Heather’s guide book is just the ticket, expecially on those cold December evenings when you are trying to figure out what’s not right with that new calf. Heather and her husband, Lynn Thomas, have worked their Snake River country ranch for many years and they depend on hands-on solutions to keep their cattle business top side up. With this book it’s like having a perfect neighbor handy to your own ranching adventures. I know her sparkling and essential new edition of Guide to Raising Beef Cattle will be close at hand on our small ranch.

Storey’s Guide to Raising Beef Cattle, 4th Edition, available November 2018. ISBN 978-1-63586-039-9

Farm Collector Show Directory: A Review

Every year we get a copy of this outstanding year-round calendar guide to antique farm equipment shows across the U.S. and Canada. This is the first time I thought, just as with our own publication, that it’s possible there are a lot of folks out there who don’t know this exists. So we’re telling everyone about it. If you are involved with a farm show or plowing match or reenactment, etc. you really need to be advertising in this beauty. If you are on a tour of farming in North American you need to have this be your guide for setting up your itinerary. I’m enthused about this publication because it is a dead-on barometer of how vital our (yours and my) values and efforts are all across the countryside.
