BUILDING THE CHARACTER OF YOUR PLACE: Akio Suyematsu started over 50 years ago on Bainbridge Island, recycling his old license plates with a tin snips, cutting out and nailing up numbers for his rows of berries and other crops. All are still legible today, and give the farm a unique feel, that speaks of care over time in small things. And several farms in the midwest and northwest sport collections of old shoes nailed to fence posts, that sometimes attract nests or grow things, and look stunning in a new snowfall. — PH

DRIVESHAFT MEDICINE: When you need to replace a worn-out universal joint on any driveshaft, a little care will reap great dividends. The new joint’s four cups have what looks like vaseline in them, but that is really just “filler” to hold the needle bearings in place, and is no more effective at lubricating under pressure than vaseline would be. You should clean that out, and pack any new universal joint with a top-grade CV joint grease containing molybdenum. It’s sold in squeeze tubes, and will outlast ordinary grease by three or four times on your bush hog or pickup driveshaft. — PH

Touching the Chill

Watching treetops in the distance
as the leaves lift and stir
in the cool first breath of morning
with the first sun on your skin
touching the chill there
eyeing high clouds piling up out west

no matter what the radio says
might be headed your way
with the field already mowed

haying weather here and now
has to be perfect otherwise
someone will need to work quick

–Paul Hunter

“Why are human beings not satisfied, as are the birds, with what they can glean? Why do they earn their sustenance by the sweat of their brows and suffer so?” — Masanobu Fukuoka
