Apple Upside-Down Cake

3 tablespoons butter
5 juicy apples
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
3 tablespoons melted butter
nutmeg
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar (granulated)
pinch salt
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup flour

Into a cake pan put 3 tablespoons butter. Peel and slice the apples thin and add to the butter. Add the brown sugar and sprinkle with nutmeg. For the batter, place the melted butter into a measuring cup, drop the egg in, and fill with milk. Beat thoroughly. Sift together the granulated sugar, salt, baking powder, and flour. Add to the first mixture. Beat thoroughly for 3 minutes, pour over the apple mixture, and bake the mixture for 40 minutes in a hot oven (400 degrees F). Serve with whipped cream. A favorite recipe for gingerbread or chocolate cake may be used instead of the batter here given. Serves 6.
