Organic No-Till Garlic

A new video from Eric and Anne Nordell

We may be the last peasant farmers on earth to own a cell phone. We finally purchased one to stay involved in agricultural research. It has also made it possible for us to document with live action our no-till/cover crop method of growing garlic.

When we shared the video with Lynn, he responded with this over-the-top review. We have also received positive feedback from friends who are vegetable growers, organic farming consultants, and university teacher-researchers. We hope that their comments hint at the content and format of this short video without giving away the whole plot.

Organic No-Till Garlic

Here it is, with brevity that belies the complexity, with tangles that tease the order, with shared enthusiasms powerful and insightful, a video of fantastic gardening success. Here, we catch our breath for a moment and witness the moving parts of a staggeringly grand accomplishment with a life on a small farm. Reflected by decades of Anne and Eric’s rich brocade of inquiry into the orchestration of a top soil’s happy growth to astounding balance and fertility; in this short, deliberate, carefully crafted film of their legendary garden and gardening, the Nordell’s of Pennsylvania offer up to anyone anywhere on this sacred, fragile, and hungry planet an illuminating action view of one small example of how farming might be holistically and practically accomplished to the benefit of the entirety of biological life. This important short film allows we might listen to the soil and the working of the workhorse team and their human partners as they so graciously earn the forgiveness Nature offers, by way of genuine, humble, partnership.

“Wow, thank you so much for sharing this. It brought tears to my eyes. Your farm and your practices are incredible. So inspiring. You can see the health of your soil in the impressive stands of cover crops. Wow, wow, wow!!!”

“Thank you for your message and your very informative Organic No-Till Garlic video. It is wonderful that you have developed a way to plant green to provide your own mulch! And that you explain each aspect of your garlic production and your fallow-system for weed control. I often use videos in my classes and am often looking for new ones. So, thank you! I will show this to my students and share it with others!”

“This is absolutely fantastic. I’ve sent it to our team for all of them to watch and learn from. It’s exactly the kind of thing we’ d like to get into.”

“I like how detailed this is — I feel like it moves methodically through the whole process and I like that it ends with the same images it starts with, just to indicate that the whole cycle has been shown — no missing steps.”

“Thank you for the link to your garlic production video. It came at a good time! I’m teaching Veg Crops in the Fall semester, and it’ ll be a great video to show the students how to grow garlic and about environmental sustainability.”

“This is really well put together! Thanks for sharing. It’s helpful to see the whole process. I’m definitely going to try your curing method this year! It’s so cool seeing your horses in action too!”
