Dear Lynn, Kristi, and the Small Farmer’s Journal Crew,

Thanks for all of the great publications and workshops. I can sincerely say that our farming with horses would not be possible without your work. Several years ago we heard you speak at the California Certified Organic Farming conference and have never looked back. Not long after the conference, Kris and I took a draft horse workshop with Randy Clayton and Draft Horses for Hire in Santa Cruz, CA – our first hands on experience with draft horses. Looking back now, (even with my limited experience), I can appreciate what a generous act it is for an experienced horseman to mentor an inexperienced student and let them learn from their horses. I also appreciate all of the advice and information that I get from all the experienced teamsters at your workshops; I really look forward to them.

The photos are of our farm, located in Dorena, Oregon. We have about 35 acres and grow certified organic vegetables, cut flowers, and plants, which we sell at the Eugene / Lane Co. Farmer’s Market and in our community supported agriculture program. In any one-year, we have about 2 – 3 acres in intensive production, the rest in cover crops, pasture, wild lands, etc. Although we have and use a tractor, we are doing most of the work with Ruby and Amber, our beautiful and willing mares who are both patient and forgiving with us. They are 11 yrs. old and were trained by David Mader of Horsepower Organics over in eastern Oregon. We have geldings out of each mare and hope to have them working in the next several years.

During the growing season, we host several “farm days” and school visits where visitors can participate in horse farming and learn about sustainable farming techniques. These events are very satisfying for us and great at local community building. We also do wagon rides and small amount of logging. You and your friends / subscribers have an open invitation to visit us anytime.

Thanks for your work and support.
