The Art of Bonnie Shields
by Lynn R. Miller of Singing Horse Ranch
We have been dear friends with Bonnie Shields for over forty years. Bonnie is a living legend having traversed the Wild West and MidWest with her beloved mules while painting, illustrating books, calendars, gift cards and walls for decades. She is a genuine folk artist of top caliber. In the past we ran images of her outstanding seasonal paintings featuring, of course, mules at work and play. On these pages she has permitted us to showcase some other pieces (make sure to look at The Desert Princess on the inside back cover of this issue).
There is a brand-spanking BIG new book on Bonnie, Bonnie Shields, The Tennessee Mule Artist, coauthored by Meredith Hodges and Bonnie. This is a lovely coffee table book; huge, in full color, and overflowing. It offers the complete body of Bonnie’s unique, humorous and beautiful work presented in an engaging scrapbook format. Here you will learn, through articles and shared stories, of the impact Bonnie has had on the humor of western culture. Bonnie’s the real deal. In fact the words genuine and authentic just aren’t large enough to encompass her and her life’s work. Kristi and I count ourselves very fortunate to have known her and shared so many far flung adventures. I’m very glad to be able to entice some new folks into this woman’s western world, one immersed with and devoted to her hero, the mule. LRM
